Current role – Safety Advisor and Company Security Officer, North Star Shipping
Starting at North Star as a 16 year old apprentice deckhand, I have had great experience at sea and now onshore. The company put me through my deck officer’s certificate and then enabled me to move into a more shore-based role when the time was right.
I currently assist seafarers of all ranks with Health & Safety issues, overseeing safety meetings and incident reports, keeping seafarers appraised of changes to legislation, and providing health and safety training. I also oversee the implementation of the International Ships & Port Facilities Secutiry (ISPS) Code, conducting on-site ship security assessments and compiling ships security plans for all North Star’s vessels.
During this time, I have been involved in various programmes and training, obtaining certification, accreditation and expertise in key HSE areas.
The culture at North Star allows me to remain a sensible Health & safety Advisor offering practical assistance and advice to our seafarers. I see my role as empowering people to work safely rather than preventing people from working unsafely. My first-hand experience at sea means that I am able to offer practical advice to crews which they appreciate.
