Two Sea Dog Musketeers

2nd April 2007

BETWEEN THE TWO of them they have clocked up 182 years
with 80 years spent at sea. David Craig and Tom Allan, both 91, were very successful skippers within the Craig Group fishing fleet which numbered 23 fishing vessels before joining the Common Market. Both these men have seen the transition from steam to oil fired and finally diesel vessels.

During the war years (1939-45) they served for a time in the
Royal Naval Reserve carrying out mine sweeping which involved keeping the shipping lanes clear and safe from various types of mines. They then transferred to anti submarine vessels escorting the convoys of merchant ships carrying various types of war material from America to the Channel ports.

After the war years they both resumed fishing again in the North Sea, west of Shetland, Faroe and Icelandic waters and believe they are the last survivors of the strong Aberdeen trawler fleet which operated successfully and effectively over the past 75 years.
